The Institute of Medical Sciences - IMS-BHU is one of the six institutes of Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi.  IMS was Established in 1960, the Institute of Medical Sciences is the medical school of the Banaras Hindu University and has three faculties (Medicine, Ayurveda & Dental Sciences). It has 33 departments of Modern Medicine including 10 departments of super-specialities, four departments of dentistry, eleven departments of ayurveda and a school of nursing. The institution is approved by Medical Council of India. It is ranked 6th for Medical by NIRF and The Week in 2019. It offers medical and paramedical courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

• In the year 1960, the Ayurvedic College was transformed to the College of Medical Sciences and Professor K.N. Uduppa was its founding principal
• The College of Medical Sciences got advanced to Institute of Medical Sciences in 1971
• The Sir Sunderlal Hospital which is attached to IMS, BHU is basically a teaching training hospital for students of the institute
• There are more than 300 teaching faculty and 400 technical staff, is the backbone of the Institute
